Many of us will be tucking into the traditional dish of turkey and ham. No matter how often it’s basted, it can be a bit on the dry rather than succulent side, so best match it with a rounded, fruity wine rather than anything too crisp or dry. Neither meat is too protein-rich, so go for medium-bodied wines at most, with light to moderate tannins (in reds). Pick out the fruity flavours of cranberry sauce with a fruity wine to match.

The best matches for turkey, according to the experts, are southern Rhône reds, like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Merlot, Australian Shiraz, and New World Pinot Noir. White Burgundy and lightly-oaked Chardonnay, including New World, are the best white pairings. Any of these will work well with baked ham.

Pedra d'Auga Albarino is a perfect accompaniment to a fish starter -recommended by The Irish Examiner, and Food & Wine magazine.
Le Grand Blanc a delicious rich and satisfying blend of Chardonnay, Roussanne and Viognier from the south of France. Lightly oaked, with wonderfully expansive layered flavours peach, mango, toast, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom, vanilla, fennel, white pepper, holding in a long buttery finish. €15.95.

Sancerre Jean Max Roger is a classic traditional white which would suit starters of fish, shellfish or goat’s cheese. Crisp and dry, perfect for cutting through creamy or buttery starters. Red wine recommendations:

Ch. Bonnin Lussac St Emilion is a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux, with a perfect balance of classic earthy notes (think graphite, oak), together with ripe dark berries. Lovely mouthfeel and a super long finish. €15.95.“Classic claret.” – The Irish Independent.
