Wines for Easter 2024

What does Easter mean for you?  Time off work?  Relaxed weekend brunch?  Chocolate?  Easter egg hunts? Roast lamb?

In Ireland, we have really great lamb.  It has its own unique flavour profile – saovury, earthy, and often complemented with rosemary and/or garlic and plenty of crunchy sea-salt. Red wine is the colour of choice: Rioja, Bordeaux, and Chianti Classico, as well as Rhône blends of Grenache and Syrah (eg Côtes du Rhône), are all classic pairings.

If you are talented enough to be able to make a rich, fruity gravy, then you can choose a ripe fruity red from the New World to showcase your cooking skills.

  • Sancho Garces Rioja Crianza - This smooth, medium-bodied, velvety tasting wine is an all-round favourite for most foods, but really comes into its own with roast lamb.  In fact, lamb is a specialty of the Rioja region.  Ripe dark berry flavours, vanilla and sweet spices are a perfect counterpoint to the savoury taste of roast leg of lamb. Of all our Molloys Exclusive wines, this is a must-try! Still

  • Chianti Classico Geggiano This single estate Chianti Classico starts with powerful toasty aromas, followed by rich, dark-fruit, woody herbs and hints of violets. It's a perfect example of a really good Chianti, and very good value.
  • Dame Guilherme Côtes du Rhône Villages ‘Plan de Dieu’we like to find value, and with this wine, its vineyards are similar to its more famous neighbour, Châteauneuf-du-Pape.  The style is quite close, but the price is much more friendly!  This is a rich, full-bodied, warm, spicy red, bursting with ripe fruit, hints of liquorice, with a plush, velvety finish.

Fish on Good Friday? No longer a hardship, especially with:

    • Chablis Domaine de PerdrycourtTruly classic Chablis”– as described by Matt Nugent, in The Irish Sun. This will be fantastic with any classic white fish on your in-house “menu.”

Chocolate – your kids will need to hide their Easter eggs, with these fab pairings:

    • Ca Vittoria Appassimento this 92 point cracker of a wine will go equally well with Easter eggs (or spicy lamb)!
    • Gran Passione: ... it's absolutely lovely; it's really dark, intensely fruity, you're going to get a slightly raisiny edge to it; this one is really delivering! " - Movies & Booze, Moncrieff Show, Today FM.
